SAM HUGHES DISTRICT REAL ESTATE FOR SALE
TUCSON, ARIZONA 95716, 85719

Bounded by Speedway on the north, Broadway on the south, Country
Club on the east and Campbell on the west, Sam Hughes District is
one of those areas that long time citizens speak of but newer residents
to the area don’t quite know what they are talking about.
Basically it is made up of a group of subdivisions and streets that
banded together to form a governing body to ensure that the area
is maintained and not allowed to fall into disrepair. Sam Hughes
is probably made up of perhaps more historic homes than you will
find in most of the other Tucson communities. Due to the age of many
of the homes, most owners wanted the area to continue to look as
it did in its heyday. This has caused the Sam Hughes community to
be in demand by people who love restoring older homes and people
who just find a comfort in the settled look and feel of the area.
So, who was this Sam Hughes guy? Well, he was born in Wales, Scotland
and moved with his family to the US in 1837 when he was eight years
old. He never had any formal schooling but when his parents died
when he was still young, he made sure his eight brothers and sister
were educated. He came to Tucson in 1858, married in 1863 and fathered
a large family. In the 1870’s he helped incorporate Tucson
and became an alderman on the first city council. In 1871 he helped
to establish public education in the territory. One of the first
subdivisions in Tucson named the new elementary school in its area
after Sam Hughes in 1928 eleven years after his death.
According to the Tucson MLS, Sam Hughes homes for sale are made up
of a very wide variety of sizes, types, and prices. Homes in this
area were built roughly between the 1920’s and the 1990’s.
Prices are from the low $90,000 to almost one million dollars and
are between 700 and 4,000 square feet. Most are one story and have
anywhere between 2 and 8 bedrooms. The styles are as different as
the price and sizes; Bungalow, Ranch, Territorial, Contemporary and
Southwestern.
Sam Hughes is located in what is known as School District #1 (Tucson
Unified School District or TUSD) The Museum
School For The Visual Arts is just one example of how TUSD has worked
to keep students wanting to be in school. In this case the students
whose main interest is in the arts go to standard classes in the
morning and in the afternoon they work with a wide variety of art
forms. The school is held in the Tucson Museum Of Art. This is just
one indication of TUSD’s interest in including all young people
in education while weaving standard learning with their particular
interests.
