The University of Arizona Mirror Laboratory
Steward Observatory Mirror Lab

At the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory, a team of scientists and engineers are making giant, lightweight mirrors for a new generation of telescopes.

These mirrors are a new concept from the solid-glass mirrors used in the past. They are honeycombed on the inside. They offer the advantages of their solid counterparts, rigidity and stability, but they can be made significantly larger and dramatically lighter.

This remarkable team of scientists and inventors has also come up with new way to polish these new mirrors that gives them the ability to be much shorter while offering a greater view. One of the advantages of this is that the enclosure for these mirrors can be much smaller therefore much less expensive.

The Steward Observatory Mirror Lab located at 527 National Champion Drive, right next to Arizona Stadium on the University of Arizona campus offers frequent guided tours to students, visiting astronomers, astronomy clubs and the general public. On any given day, the Mirror Lab may contain $20 million worth of large telescope optics in fabrication. Tours must be scheduled at least a week in advance in order to coordinate tour guides; No walk-in tours are permitted.
