BALLET
ARIZONA OF TUCSON
What child has not seen the Nutcracker at least on TV? Every Christmas
it returns and, with it, most of us have memories of years past. Jacque
remembers dressing up and going with her mother to the ballet in Santa
Barbara. It was magic.
That magic is brought to children in Tucson through Ballet Arizona
of Tucson and often accompanied by the Tucson or Phoenix Symphony Orchestra.
The story comes to life and children are soon lost in the wonder of
the dance, the story, the costumes and the music. Thanks to an amazing
troupe of dancers under the direction of Ib Andersen who was a student
of Balanchine, another memory is made.
But The Nutcracker is not your only opportunity to go to the ballet.
Every year Tucson is blessed with four or five performances to delight
the young and old. Some are the well known such as Swan Lake while others
are new including some that have recently been commissioned.
The Ballet Arizona of Tucson is made up of 30 dancers. For a two-hour
production the dancers will typically rehearse 4 to 6 weeks for up to
8 hours a day Monday through Friday. These people whose average age
is 22 years come to us from all over the world including Chile Argentina,
Taiwan and the Ukraine while director Ib Andersen is from Denmark.
To spend two hours relaxing and taking in the delight of such a splendid
offerings the Ballet Arizona of Tucson is truly a reward in itself.
