Flandrau Science Center

Tucson is known for its clear days and starry nights. This has created a great interest in space. People whose interests range from looking at the moon to those who go beyond our solar system frequent the center located on the University of Arizona grounds.

The center is divided into five areas:

  • The most dramatic is the Planetarium where a wide variety of shows are held. These vary in content from rather deep educational information to the flamboyant. In either case most everyone including small children will find the shows memorable.
  • The Observatory offers visitors a chance to look through their 16” telescope with the help of an expert operator who will show you many of the wonders of space.
  • The Mineral Museum at Flandrau is one of the finest University-owned collections of gems and minerals in the country.
  • The Flandrau Science Store is an excellent place to go for gifts. You'll find toys, puzzles, t-shirts, posters, and much more.
  • The Heliochronometer is a sundial that was donated to the Science Center in 2001 by sundial artist John Carmichael. It is valued at $15,000 and is a magnificent addition to the center.

If you are interested in holding an event in a particularly unusual setting, the Science Center is a place to consider. There are several options from which to choose. To learn more call 520-621-7827 or email ksnyden@u.arizona.edu.
