This intriguing museum is located in one of Tucson’s parks that was developed around a fort.

It is located in the reconstructed commanding officer’s quarters in what was Fort Lowell.  Visitors can have a glimpse into what life was like in the frontier in the later part of the 1800’s.

The fort was built in 1873.  The main goal was to protect the settlers and those coming through the area on their way to California as well as to guard the border.

During the time when the fort was most active, there were 130 officers and 230 enlisted men serving at the fort.

When the wars with the Apache Indians ended in 1891, the fort was deserted.  Since 1963 the Arizona Historical Society has maintained the museum.  Today there are walking tours, lectures and living history events that take place from time to time.
