Hiking / Trails

Part of what makes Arizona so unique is its diversity. Nowhere is this more evident than in the reasons people hike here. There are people who hike to see the amazing number of types of butterflies who either make this their home or just pass through on their way to Mexico in the winter and places to the north of us in the summer, this is a butterfly haven. This applies to hummingbirds as well. Then there are the people who hike to the cliffs in the Catalina mountains so they can rappel. As you drive up the Catalina highway, you can see some of these remarkable structures of nature. And many people just like to take leisurely walks whether it is into Sabino Canyon or walking the 8 mile trail in the Saguaro (“sah-war-o”) National Monument East (the monument also continues on the west side of Tucson).

Southern Arizona is blessed with what we love to call “Sky Islands”. These are mountain chains that may be just a few miles in length but each has something about it that sets it apart. Scientists love studying these islands as the flora and fauna in each area is just a bit different. Many of these areas have excellent hiking trails as well as camping sites.

Throughout Arizona you can find interesting places to hike. From a climb into the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix where the Lost Dutchman Mine still calls to the hopeful prospector, to an unforgettable hike down into the Grand Canyon. Some areas are easy, others are challenging. The weather will dictate to some extent where you should hike and how you should prepare. But always ... Always ... ALWAYS be careful. Never go alone. Always let people know where you are going. Bring a whistle, sunscreen, water (plenty of water) and a cell phone. Going alone is asking for trouble. Even so, hiking is a rewarding experience for the thousands of people who take to Arizona’s over 50 designated trails every year.
