OLD TOWN ARTISANS

In 1775, the Spanish had pressed north into what is now southern Arizona in their efforts to develop New Spain. At that time they built a fort for safety from the Apaches and as a place to station their soldiers. Today only remnants of this fort are left but the site of the Old Town Artisans is located where the stables of the fort once stood. The rebuilding of the adobe buildings as they are today was begun in the 1850’s.

By 1882 there were several businesses on the site including a ladies’ nurse, an assayer’s office as well as a general store. Later it was turned into a distillery and residence for family.

When you visit the shops, you can still see the original ceilings made out of the items they had available which included saguaro cactus ribs, whiskey barrel staves and packing crates. There are places where the imported wallpaper can still be seen as well as gold leaf mouldings.

The shops include: a fabulous place to find items for children as well as cards, prints, southwestern foods and cookbooks and amazing masks; home furnishings, glass works, handcrafted pottery; Indian jewelry, rugs, carvings, Kachinas and sand paintings; jewelry and accessories, much of it made by artists in our region; unique collectibles; a southwestern boutique; a contemporary art gallery featuring Arizona artists.

Enjoy a bite to eat in the cantina or dining room of the La Cocina Restaurant or try out new flavors at the Wilde Rose Coffee along with a dish of ice cream or other treats.

All in all, Old Town Artisans is a place to wander, to experience, to buy and to remember as a gem in a memorable visit.

Old Town Artisans is located at:

201 N. Court Avenue,
one block NW of Church & Alameda.
Entrances are on Court, Washington, Meyer & Telles.
