If there is any one icon that depicts Arizona and Tucson in particular,
it likely would be the saguaro (pronounced "sah-war-o"). This
magnificent giant exists only in the amazing Sonoran Desert region covering
the southern part of New Mexico, Arizona, California and northern Mexico.
Did you know they are at least 70 years old before they get their
first arm? They are like gigantic straws and in some seasons have been
known to hold up to a ton of water.
Here in Tucson, we are blessed with two large areas of saguaro forest,
one on either side of town. The Saguaro National Park West has been
left pretty much wild and is dramatic to see. The Saguaro National Park
East has been set up as a visitor’s area with a terrific center
where you can learn about the life of the saguaro as well as other plants
found in the area. There is also a wonderful drive, bike ride or walk
you can take that meanders through beautiful desert scenery. The small
cost is truly worth the money.
One of our former agents was married to the ranger who instituted the
east set up so we feel akin to it. They have since transferred to the
Padre Islands and are now retired. Good people and dedicated to preserving
our natural wonders.
