Come visit the single remaining Titian II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).  It was known as Site 57 1-7.  At one time it was part of 54 such sites that were always on alert during the Cold War.  It was part of the missile system assigned to Davis/Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson.   It’s first alert date was July of 1963.

Ask Barry about the sites.  As he was the supervisor of the Flight Surgeon’s Office at Davis Monthan, he flew with the crews who were going out to replace the incoming crews at the sites.

Under President Reagan the sites were ordered to be deactivated by 1987.

Initially each site was left open for inspection by Soviet satellites.  Later much of the equipment was salvaged for other uses.  November 11, 1982 marked the last day it was actually in use.  This particular site was in close proximity to Green Valley and Tucson and many retired military people who felt that it would be best served as a museum to remind folks of the cold war years.

The task was not easy and required thousands of man hours and dedication to turn it into the museum it is today.  It’s doors first opened to the public in May of 1986.  In 1994 the museum was declared a National Historic Landmark.

Tours are available.  Check with the museum for times and prices as well as for the hours they are open.
